World Sight Day 2019

The ‘CLASS CARES’ campaign which is aimed to help raise awareness on the importance of eye care has this year been awarded to The University of Malta’s Research, Innovation & Development Trust (RIDT).

The event coincided with World Sight Day held on the 10th October, 2019 and which event falls under the auspices of the World Health Organisation. This year’s theme has been titled ‘Vision First’ and seeks to raise awareness of the importance to have one’s eyes tested every two years at minimum as a preventative measure against eye related illnesses.

During a press conference held on the day, Mr. Mario Vella (ophthalmologist) Head of Ophthalmic Unit MDH announced a research project is underway with the objective to assess the incidence of eye related illnesses in Malta across a random sample comprising a few thousand respondents falling between the ages 50-80 years.

The initiative was conceived by Mr. Francis Carbonaro, a leading ophthalmologist specialising in glaucoma cases, who found support through RIDT (Mr. Wilfred Kenely-CEO), who in turn sought financial aid from the Malta Community Chest Fund (MCCF) for the procurement of ophthalmic equipment as part of the project.
